How to Find Recently Released Polk County Inmates
The Polk County Sheriff's Office jail inquiry is the starting point for county-level release searches. By default, the search shows current inmates. To find people who have already left custody, uncheck the "Current inmates only" box before running a name search. The roster also allows searching by booking year going back to 1999, which lets you pull up a full year of bookings and see which profiles show a release date. When an inmate is released, Intake Records Specialists at the Sheriff's Processing Center in Winter Haven complete a book-out process that updates the record.
If you cannot find someone in the Sheriff's roster, it may mean the person was transferred to state or federal custody. People sentenced to more than a year in Florida may transfer to Florida Department of Corrections custody. In that case, the Polk County roster will no longer show them as current inmates, but the FDOC offender search will. Federal defendants go to the Bureau of Prisons system. Call the AIS line at 863-457-3738 or the call center at 863-292-3400 to ask about transfer status directly. For case outcome and final disposition, the Polk County Clerk of the Circuit Court holds the court record, separate from the jail system.
Setting Up Release Notifications
VINE is Florida's statewide victim and community notification system. It is free to use and lets anyone register to receive alerts when a specific inmate is released, transferred, or has a change in custody status. The Polk Sheriff's jail inquiry page links to VINELink and describes VINE as the way to receive statewide victim notification for specific inmates. The VINE phone line is 1-877-846-3435. Notifications go by phone, text, or email depending on how you register.
The VINELink Florida portal lets users search for Polk County inmates and set up automatic release alerts by phone, email, or text.
- Go to vinelink.com and select Florida as your state.
- Search by the inmate's name or ID and confirm you have found the right person.
- Choose "Register for Notification" and enter your phone number or email address.
- Create a PIN that will be used to confirm alerts when the system calls or emails you.
- Confirm your registration. VINE will then notify you each time the person's custody status changes.
VINE notifications are not legal documents and do not carry legal effect on their own. They are an alert service. Always confirm release with the holding agency before taking any action.
Searching the Florida Department of Corrections
When a Polk County defendant is sentenced to Florida state prison, custody transfers from the Sheriff's Office to the Florida Department of Corrections. At that point, the person leaves the local jail roster and enters the FDC offender database. The FDOC offender search covers current inmates, released inmates, supervised offenders on probation, absconders, and fugitives. You can search across all those categories or filter to one.
The FDOC offender search menu covers Florida state prison inmates including Polk County residents sentenced to state custody, with options for current, released, and supervised populations.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DC Number | Text | Optional (if known) | FDC's unique inmate identifier; fastest route to the exact record. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Primary search field when DC number is unknown. |
| First Name | Text | Optional | Narrows results for common last names. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Additional filter to narrow results by race. |
| Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Filter by male or female. |
| Search Category | Menu selection | Yes | Choose from: inmate population, released inmate, supervised population, absconder/fugitive, or other categories. Select "Released Inmate" for post-release searches. |
| Release Date Range | Date pickers | Optional | Narrows released-inmate searches to a specific time window. |
The FDOC search is free and does not require an account. Results show the offender's FDC number, name, race, sex, current status, sentence information, and facility or supervision region. For Polk County residents, look for the sentencing county field to confirm the case originated here. Note: FDC tracks only state-sentenced offenders, not people still in county jail or in federal custody.
Federal Bureau of Prisons Locator
Some Polk County criminal cases are prosecuted in federal court rather than state court. Federal defendants convicted of crimes such as drug trafficking, firearms offenses, bank robbery, or federal fraud are sentenced to federal prison and appear in the Bureau of Prisons system. The BOP inmate locator at bop.gov/inmateloc covers both current federal inmates and those released after 1982. It does not show state inmates or county jail inmates.
The BOP inmate locator is the federal system for finding Polk County residents sentenced to federal prison, including release dates and current facility assignments.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find by Number | Tab / text | Optional route | Accepts BOP Register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number for exact matches. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Required when searching by name; partial names accepted. |
| First Name | Text | Optional | Middle name field also available to narrow results. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Additional filter for common names. |
| Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Male or female filter. |
| Age | Text / range | Optional | Useful for common names with many matches. |
BOP results show the inmate's register number, age, race, sex, release date if applicable, and projected release date for current inmates. Results for released inmates are available but limited; the system retains records for those released after 1982. For federal cases filed in Polk County's federal district, case records are available through PACER at pacer.uscourts.gov under the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
Verifying Release in Person or by Phone
Phone verification is often faster than waiting for an online record to update. For Polk County jail release status, call the AIS at 863-457-3738 any time, day or night. A call-center representative at 863-292-3400 can also answer questions during business hours. The Sheriff's Processing Center at 863-292-3400 handles the book-out process, so staff there can confirm whether a release has been completed. Keep in mind that the physical release step takes time even after a bond is posted; the record may show a change before or after the person physically walks out, depending on processing speed.
For state prison releases, the FDOC does not publish a direct public phone line for individual release queries on its general contact pages. The VINE line at 1-877-846-3435 is the recommended automated route. Victims registered through the FDOC victim notification system can also use the FDOC victim services portal. For federal releases, the BOP online locator is the primary tool; BOP facilities have individual phone numbers if a specific facility is known. The Polk County Clerk of the Circuit Court at 863-534-4000 can confirm case disposition and whether a sentence is complete, which may help you understand expected release timing.
Florida Sex Offender Registry
Florida law requires sex offenders and sexual predators to register with local law enforcement after release. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement maintains the public registry at offender.fdle.state.fl.us. Polk County residents on the registry can be found by name, address, ZIP code, or county. The registry is a post-release tool; it shows people who have been released and are living in the community under registration requirements, not people still in custody.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Optional | Partial name accepted; leave blank to search by geography only. |
| First Name | Text | Optional | Used with last name to narrow name searches. |
| City | Text | Optional | Enter a Polk County city such as Lakeland, Bartow, or Winter Haven. |
| County | Dropdown | Optional | Select Polk to limit results to Polk County registrants. |
| ZIP Code / Radius | Text / dropdown | Optional | Search within a set radius of a ZIP code; useful for proximity searches. |
| Address | Text | Optional | Street address search for registrants at a specific address. |
FDLE warns that the registry is for public safety information only and that misuse is a criminal offense under Florida law. Registrant information may change if an offender moves or updates their address. The registry shows name, photograph, address, offense, and registration status. Failure to register is itself a crime in Florida.
Parole and Probation in Polk County
Florida largely abolished traditional parole for crimes committed after October 1, 1983. People sentenced under Florida's current Criminal Punishment Code serve mandatory portions of their sentence and may be released on conditional release or post-prison supervision, not traditional parole. The Florida Commission on Offender Review oversees clemency and certain older parole cases. For offenders released from state prison on post-prison supervision, the Florida Department of Corrections manages supervision through its community supervision offices.
Probation in Florida is a sentence imposed by the court instead of or following prison. Probation officers employed by FDC supervise probationers in the community. If a Polk County probationer violates conditions, the supervising officer or the State Attorney may file a violation of probation, which returns the case to the circuit court for a hearing. Polk County Circuit Court probation violation cases run through the Clerk's system and can be found in the Clerk's criminal records portal. The FDOC offender search also covers people currently on supervision as a separate category from inmates.

Reentry Resources in Polk County
People released from Polk County custody or from Florida state prison face immediate needs: housing, employment, benefits, and sometimes treatment services. The Florida Department of Corrections operates a searchable reentry resource directory at pubapps.fdc.myflorida.com/resourcedirectory. The directory can be filtered by county, circuit, city, ZIP code, or service type. Searching with Polk County selected returns local providers offering housing, employment, mental health, substance abuse treatment, transportation, and other services to returning citizens.

The Tenth Judicial Circuit also operates the Polk County DUI/Drug Court, which steers eligible defendants toward treatment and supervision as an alternative to standard sentencing. Successful completion can affect case disposition and post-release obligations. For help with court forms, the Clerk's forms and packets page covers divorce, landlord-tenant, injunctions, and small claims self-help.
Civil Rights Restoration After Release
Florida felony convictions suspend certain civil rights. Voting rights, the right to hold public office, and the right to serve on a jury are among the rights suspended. Florida Amendment 4, passed in 2018 and implemented with statutory conditions, generally allows people convicted of most felonies to have their voting rights automatically restored upon completion of all terms of their sentence, including probation, fines, and restitution. People convicted of murder or felony sexual offenses must go through the clemency process before their voting rights are restored.
Firearm rights are a separate matter. Florida law and federal law both restrict firearm possession for people with felony convictions. Restoring firearm rights typically requires a full clemency grant. Florida's clemency process is administered by the Florida Commission on Offender Review and the Governor's office. The process involves an application, waiting periods, and a hearing in some cases. There is no automatic restoration of firearm rights in Florida for most felony offenses.
Employment restrictions vary by profession. Some licenses, certifications, and public-sector jobs have statutory bars for people with certain convictions. Florida law also limits how private employers may use criminal history in hiring decisions. The Clerk's expungement and sealing page at polkcountyclerk.net/241/Expunging-a-Record explains how to apply to seal or expunge eligible Polk County records, which can improve employment and housing outcomes after release. The Clerk charges $42 for that service.
The FDOC victim assistance page covers notification services and provides information relevant to both victims and returning citizens navigating the post-release system in Florida.
